"So what's the next step?"

Falmouth DPW needs to work with the state to obtain the final permits

The town needs to work closely with MassDOT (Department of Transportation) to wrap up the permitting process. In the fall of 2018, MassDOT officials responded positively to Falmouth's initial conceptual pitch of the project, and shortly thereafter MassDOT lowered the speed limit on that stretch of Palmer Avenue, which is a state road.

In March of 2019, when asked when this crosswalk would likely be built, Peter McConarty, then deputy director of the Falmouth DPW (Department of Public Works), wrote me (Elizabeth Saito) that, "We will look at having all the [permitting] work completed and construction scheduled by February 2020, but it may be in the fall timeframe of 2020."

It appears that the permitting process has stalled. The town, not the state, is responsible for funding construction of the crosswalk, and, in June, town engineer, Jim McLoughlin, wrote me that there is currently no funding in place for the crosswalk.
